Police Reserves

The Golden Valley Police Department has a solid Police Reserve Unit of volunteer men and women who provide support services to the citizens of Golden Valley and members of the Public Safety Department. These services include traffic control, crime prevention, support for Neighborhood Watch programs, residence and business checks, security assignments, and emergency response to disasters and crisis situations.

Reserve Officers spend most of their time riding in a squad car with another Reserve Officer and assisting sworn officers when needed. After completing required training and an evaluation as directed by the department, Reserve Officers are able to use a squad car to check residences, perform assigned details, patrol parks, and assist officers as requested.

Topics covered in the extensive Reserve Officer training program include:

  • duties and responsibilities of a Reserve Officer
  • officer safety issues
  • use and care of the squad car and its equipment
  • shotgun instruction and qualification
  • current law enforcement issues
  • self-defense
  • care of people in custody

To qualify to be a Police Reserve Officer, applicants must:

  • be at least 18 years old
  • possess a valid Minnesota driver's license with a good driving record
  • pass an oral examination
  • pass a complete background investigation

If you have questions or would like to receive an application, contact Sergeant Kyle Toavs at 763-593-8079 or ktoavs@ci.golden-valley.mn.us.
